Woodtyper is an online journal focusing on wood type and related topics, such as large-scale lettering, decorative typefounding, letterpress printing, sign painting, penmanship, poster printing, engraving, etc. It is edited by Nick Sherman.
While in the undergraduate graphic design program at MassArt in 2006 Nick began work on Intercut, an experimental wood type design and production project. Since then he has remained actively involved with wood type: he spent a month in residency at the Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum in Two Rivers Wisconsin; presented his work with wood type at TypeCon 2007; taught typography and letterpress printing at MassArt; lectured and taught as a guest in the Rob Roy Kelly American Wood Type Collection; advised on Typeface, a documentary film about the Hamilton museum; sat on a panel about wood type at TypeCon 2009; and contributed to various online typography journals such as Typographica and ILoveTypography.
Nick works as a full-time designer for MyFonts where he helps organize and curate the world’s largest collection of digital fonts. He is also a a skateboarder, musician, pizza eater, classic horror film watcher, and monster wrestler. At present he is technically homeless, but spends most of his time between Boston & New York City.
